IDSA Supports Authorization of Bivalent COVID-19 Boosters

The Infectious Diseases Society of America supports decisions by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to authorize and recommend boosters meant to curb cases of more highly infectious strains of COVID-19.

Evidence shows that these bivalent vaccines — created specifically for the highly transmissible Omicron variant — provide needed broader and more durable protections.

IDSA supports plans to make the boosters widely available, including increasing access in communities that are at high risk of infection and where COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact.

COVID-19 is not over. Nearly 400 people die from COVID every day, and almost 5,000 people are currently hospitalized with COVID. Vaccines are the best way to prevent serious infection, hospitalization and death. Infectious diseases experts urge everyone who is eligible to get boosters.
